Discussion Board:

In what way(s) are these two articles in dialogue with one another? Can you apply the ideas expressed in "In Groups We Shrink" with the situation described by Anne Lamott in "The Rights of the Born"?

  1. These two articles dialogue with one another in a sense where they both are dealing with the behaviors of people within a group. The article "In Groups We Shrink" it gives us the reasoning behind the lack of a stand that individuals have within a group. In the article "The Rights of the Born" we have a group and we see their behaviors.
One reason in the first article for individuals not saying anything about a situation while in a group is for fear of embarrassing themselves or another. It proposes the idea that had they not been in that group they would have went about that same situation in a different manner. In the second article, we see people in a group speaking on the topic of abortion. Everyone seems to agree with the pro-choice topic. Finally someone speaks up. in the end we see that someone else agreed with her but just did not speak out on it. The person who spoke out was very hesitant to speak out. she knew it was the right thing, but because she was in a group where it seemed the majority was pro choice she did not really want to speak out.

  2. These articles are in dialogue with each other in a way of explaining the human behavior and how they react to certain experiences, when put or enters a group. In the article “In Group We Shrink” it explain how people fail to react to serious emergencies when they are accompanied by many others in a group. A person can be seen in a dying situation and the outsider will not reaction because of the fear of being different or frowned upon. In the article “The Rights of the Born” it states the reaction of a single person in the mix of a group. This article contradicts the first article showing how the opinions of others in a group caused one person out the group to speak up and state exactly what was on their mind. Both article states what being in a group does psychologically to the mind and how humans reaction to being around others.

  3. These two dialoques deal with the human behavior. In "Groups we shrink" the author talks about they ways people react when they are in groups. Individuals who are alone act without waiting for someone to do the act. People in groups wait for someone to make the move. I can relate to this article in that i've seen people in groups acting recklessly just because they are with a group. Individuals who are alone are more persuasive and would certainly help a person in need. In the second article we are dealing with the matter of abortion. Society only focus on the unborn child and does not seem to care about women. This is another factor in human behavior were women are in risk of not being able to do abortions. Both these dialoques deal with the fact that individuals are not focusing on the matter rather than watching from far and not becoming part of the issues. If those group of people who were watching the poor girl get beated would of intervene, things could've been different. Also, if politicians get more involve with the issues that women face when dealing with abortions; their perspective with abortions might change. Both dialoques are similar in that the audience isn't getting involve with the issue.

  4. The ways that the two articles "In groups we shrink" and "The rights of the born", are dialogued is because they both show how people dont speak up for themselves when theyre in a group. In the first article, in groups we shrink people did not want to speak up or call anyone while something bad was happening to someone. People think that someone else called for help and dont even bother. We act differently in groups than individuals. When were in groups we do what the other people in the groups are doing but as individuals we'd call for help. In the second article the rights of the born, the woman who did not approve of abortion waited to the end to speak her mind. She went along with it because the group she was in did approve of abortion so she did not want to embarass herself. I think that people just follow what others do when theyre in group and dont want to embarass themselves or others.

  5. I think the general idea of how we learn to co-exist in groups is tackled by both essays. The first in which the individual succumbs to fear and refuses to stand out, even in a dire situation. And the second, in which the individual faces the fear and goes against the proverbial grain. It's human nature to want to belong, but we must remember not to let instinct rule over the ego in every situation. The consequence of standing out, or not standing out should not be the only factor of actions within a group setting.

  6. These two articles dialogue with one another in a way to deal with human behavior. In "Groups we Shrink" the author talks about how when we are put alone thend to act more of what we think is right. She says how most people if they observe some disaster or danger on their own will call for help or even risk their own safety to intervene. She also says when many people are within groups they tend to not act as themselves. Sometimes when people are within a group they tend to not do what they think is right they act as a group and follow what others do instead. In the second article "The Rights of the Born" the author is talking about her discussion with an audience of social justice. During the discussion a man brings out the topic of abortion and she didnt agree with what he had said she was not going to answer but then she decided to speak what she thought was right. She talked about how women have the right to choose to whether or not to have a child. Finally, in the end a women in the audience agreed with her but was scared to speak out but felt comfortable that someone else shares the same viewpoints.

  7. Both articles "In Groups We Shrink" and "The Rights of the Born" relates to how people in the world today behave and react to certain things when they are involved in a group. "The Rights of the Born" it shows the reaction of a single person in a group. In the the article "In Groups We Shrink" it explains why many people dont get involved in certian situations when they are in a group, whether it is large or small.A reason for individuals not speaking or doing something to help someone else out is because they are afraid of embaressment of themselves or someone. Therefore it shows that if the person was by themselves they would be more likely to act without thinking or waiting on someone else to make the first move. These articles are very similar in some ways.
