For next Tuesday, please read
- Chapter 10: Writing to Persuade (pgs. 404 - 422)
Up for Discussion:
1. Describe, in detail, an image (or "shot") from the first half of "Food, Inc." that you found striking. Why was it effective?
2. Using the information gleaned from Chapter 10, write a paragraph in which you critique the persuasive power of the film "Food, Inc." What elements of persuasive writing, according to Chapter 10, does the film utilize? Which could it have used to make its argument stronger--and how?

ReplyDelete1. In "Food Inc." there were alot of things i had found striking well, more disturbing. In one part of the movie someone who owned a chicken house showed what really happens to the chickens inside. While watching this the lady shown that most chicken cant even walk because, they cant support there own weight. This is because, the chicken is growing to fast. Instead of growing in 4 months they now grow in 40 days. Also, another thing that really strikes me was that companies clean our meat w ammonia because, it is because, packages or sent out to us.
2. I think in Food Inc i think this movie is giving a arguement about how our food is made. and what goes on behind it. (not to sure how to answer this part) :(
#1.the scene i found to be one of the worse was the cows. They were all together covered in crap in a big field ,it looked like a concentration camp.
ReplyDelete#2. i think the major thing the film used was relating to the audience. All we saw was food products tha most of us had in our kitchen we saw products that were something other than what we really thought. They also made points that were really hard to argue with and even if you did have something to say ,you wait a few minutes and they shut you up
[1] The scene that caught my attention was when all the animals were animated and put on a chart resembling an assembly line. It showed me how large companies dont care about the sanitation of what we eat as long as their company gets our money.
ReplyDelete[2] The elements that are used as of sound reasoning in this movie are logos and pathos. The logos of the movie is provided by facts, data, and statistics. This shows the viewers that there is support and truth behind this argument. Pathos, means emotional appeal, and in the movie the narrator is talking about food, something we all are concerned about because we all eat. He describes how we are blind to see that major companies control our food. We may think there are millions of farms and brands to choose from but they all trace down to a huge company. The narrator makes us feel vulnerable and motivated to question what they are feeding us and our families.
#1.In food inc i think the scene that was most disturbing was when the men was pushing the cows around and how the chickens was treated in the dark room. There is a lot of bacteria and feces in the room full of chickens. They make sure all the chickens are the same size.
ReplyDelete#2. I believe the movie is made up of facts, statistics, and emotional appeal to the audience watching the film. This film is also trying to make people aware of whats going in the world, and so they know the facts behind the foods they are eating on an everyday basics.
Two scenes that struck me the most was the scene with all the chickens in the dark room, and when the little chickens were lined up in an assemly line waiting to get killed.
ReplyDeleteDuring "Food Inc", they used sound reasoning to inform the audience what they know, and backed it up with facts and statistics according to real life examples. They made us believe in what they were telling us.
Food Inc had a massive amount of memorable scenes. The one that stood out the most is the scene with the chickens in their coops in Kentucky. It was so dirty and disgusting. Seeing the chickens lay in their on fesis and filth bothered me terrible. Watching how many dead chickens just sat around until it was time for the farmers to remove them, made me want to never eat chicken again in my LIFE!
ReplyDeleteFood, Inc use sound reasoning putting together logos, pathos and ethos. In doing this it brings the audienc closer in three different but very important ways. Not only are we seeing whats actually going on during the process of getting meat, but slogans, photos and first hand experiences are begin shown to fully capture and keep the viewrs attention.
The most striking for me was that the meat I eat has been cleaned with amonia. This made me think, disguised and even worried. I wonder what else has been hidden from us.
ReplyDeleteI think the sound reasoning had very stronge argument.
Food inc. had a lot of striking scenes, but one scene that was most striking to me was when the lady was picking up the dirty chickens. some of them was already dead and they showed how some of them couldnt even walk because of their weight. Alot of things in this film made me think twice about anything i eat.
ReplyDeleteI think pathos, logos, ethos and statistics were used to show us how are foods ar being made and the history behind it.
In the first half of Food Inc., the thing that caught my attention the most was when the woman told her story where she lost her son over him eating some that had ecoli in it. This shocked me the most because it makes people realize that they have to really think about taking a risk of their life to eating these kinds of foods in fast food restaurants and regular restaurants. It affects us as a community because nobody knows what is in the food they eat.
ReplyDeleteI think logos was the method used in the movie Food Inc. because the movie stated how some foods are contaminted and bad for us, and it had evidence and reasoning to how the food is bad for us.
