Also, be prepared to share your research topic and thesis statement with the class. (It'll be interesting to discover what people are covering.)

Discussion Board:
Do you agree with the author's assertion that jokes and slurs about overweight people are "as wrong and damaging as any racial or ethnic slur"? Why or why not?

  1. I agree with the authors assertion that jokes and slurs about over weight people are as wrong and damaging as any racial or ethnic slur because those are all jokes based on physical appearences. If it isn't right to make jokes on the color of someones skin then why would it be right to make jokes about someones body size? Those types of jokes can lead any person into depression and having self esteem issues. Nothing positive comes from those types of jokes.

  2. I totally agree with the authors assertion because all those jokes are just based on how people look physically. And race and ethnically are also factors associated on how a person looks. People who are overweight are “unprotected“ this is why we judge them and we get use to discriminating against someone’s race and morals.

  3. I agree with the authors assertion that jokes and slurs due to being over weight, are as wrong and damaging as any/all racial or sthnic slurs. I say this because just words are a very strong weapon in disguise. People may think that they are just joking, but the feelings and emotions of the person being joked on cause them to be scared for life. The person may become insecure and distant for others around them. Weight jokes is discrimination just as much as race and ethnic slurs!

  4. i defnitely agree. Sometimes when the word discrimination come to mind the only ones we emphasize about are race and ethnic wise, never about body image. Today the media world portrays such a false image on what beautiful and whats not, and its sending the wrong message to young adults all over. Jokes and slurs are being made on a daily basis, and its just as bad as discrimination against race and ethinics

  5. I definitely agree. Making fun of someones weight is like making fun of someones race. Its a physical thing that can hurt people. many people dont know how to take jokes and get really offended. I suggest unless you really know the person dont joke around in that type of way. it can kill ones self esteem.

  6. I strongly agree. Discrimination is not only gender, race or ethinics is also body image. For the press only certain shape and size are consider "beautiful". Thats why today thousands of teenage girls have self image issue because they think they don't fit in this misunderstood world where they think if your not "thin" your not good enough". We see this everyday on magazines covers is always a skinny girl that's on the cover. Jokes and slurs are made on daily basic and a person on a person body image. A person should never be judge on the way they look.

  7. Making joke on someones else expense is always wrong no matter whether it is based on race, ethnisity, weight, hieght, or anything else that comes to your mind. Many times over people do not realize that a simple joke for someone can be a painful feeling for another.

  9. This comment will probably come as a surprise but I disagree with the authors statement. Yes, I do agree that comments about a persons weight is wrong but that is more of an emotional issue it is not an issue of how they are physically. Because they are able to do something about their weight and the sizze they are. People who are born into a certain race or ethnic culture can not change this. this was what they were born into. They were born into that skin color or that ethnic group, this is something that can not be changed. This is why I feel ethnic slurs and racist comments are way more hurtful. these people subject to such treatment are not able to do anything about their color, race, or ethnic group. However some overweight people aloowed themselves to get that way. Although it is still wrong to make fun on overweight people i feel it does not equal to the feeling a person feels when they are taunted because of their race or ethnic group.
